Workaholic, Meticulous, Jack of all Trades

Designer, illustrator, letterer, Karen To Nakada enjoys all kinds of projects from motion to print and everything in between. With over 7 years of experience working in the design field, Karen gained a wide range of skills and constantly looking for the next opportunity to explore. Karen and her husband Masato Nakada joined forces in 2012, together they created The Happening, a graphic design studio, in sunny west Los Angeles. She is excited to unfold all the adventure ahead. Let’s make it happen!

Brad Tucker: Creative Director at Woodshop

Karen is a hard working, eager, individual with a lust for learning. She tackles new design challenges with well thought out solutions. She excelled as one of my students, and this continued as we worked together at Stardust. Her personality shows through in her work giving her designs something unique that no one else can offer. In her “spare time” she likes to play with type. Much of this typography work is done by hand, a skill that has slowly disappeared over time. This hand done work also contributes to her delicate illustration style. She has a great portfolio full of print, motion, web, and typography. A true designer. If you get a chance to work with Karen you won’t regret it.

Alex Moore: Freelance Producer

Karen is an extremely talented designer and has consistently over many years proved herself an invaluable member of every creative team that she has worked with. She is always in tune with and builds a good rapport with Creative Directors and clients alike.

Beth Elliott: Creative Director at StandardVision

Karen is a superb collaborator and conceptual thinker. Those skills combined with her form-making skills and speed make her a valuable team member. She’s top of my freelance list for motion designers.
